It’s apparent that I’m a parent.
This is evidenced by the chubby bundle of smiles and drool and gurgly noises which I wake up to every morning. Sometimes I just look at him, fascinated, still trying to comprehend how such a short time ago he didn’t exist, but after a violent exit from my insides…he is now here in my arms.
Yesterday was one of those fascinating, heart-warming moments. I was looking at him, happily flapping his arms like a bird on my lap, and I didn’t know how my heart could contain so much love for one small person. It was at that moment I began to get a glimpse of how much God loves us as His children. It was incredible! I know that God loves me infinitely more than I love my Squeaker Bug, but wow, that’s a lot.
Then I realized something even more powerful: God’s love for us is pure, undiluted and undefiled. As much as I love my son, there have been (and probably will be again) times where I act selfishly towards him and place my needs or wants above him. I won’t always be the best example of love to him, but God will.
In a broken world where the family unit is shattered and parental love is often absent, God comes through and adopts us as His own children. He loves us sacrificially, He forgives us, He teaches us…disciplines us…swats us on the bum…and shows us how to grow and be strong and how to flourish.
We are children of God. We are destined for greatness. We are sealed in salvation.
We are loved by God far more passionately and compassionately than our parents have loved us, or how we could ever love our children. He bundles us in a love that changes our life. Live boldly in that love.
Children of God, sing your song and rejoice
For the love that He has given us all
Oh, children of God, by the blood of His son
We have been redeemed and we can be called…
Children of GodWe are the saints, we are the sinners
We’ve been redeemed, we’ve been forgiven
We are the sons and the daughters of our God(from the song “Children of God”, by Third Day)
