These Hands Were Made for Holding

Our hands were made for holding babies
And guiding toddlers as they walk
Our hands were made for playing catch
Time spent in game and talk

Our hands were made for showing love
“I want you close to me”
The power of presence is most felt
When in proximity

Our hands were made for holding doors
And lifting burdens, hard or light
Our hands were made for holding space
In prayer throughout the night

Our hands were made for making gifts
And giving them with joy
Our hands were made to build good things
Not tear down or destroy

But now the only thing we hold
Is a phone inside one hand
We’re not giving any more
We want, we need, demand

We scroll like window shoppers
Strolling to feed our eyes
We don’t contribute, just consume
This will be our demise

May God forgive our wandering hearts
For fulfilling sins demands
And may we remember that even still
He holds us in his hands
