Escape.
We all want it from something.
Escape from reality, escape from pain, from failure, from fear…from ourselves. We’re so often running from something, but what are we running to?
In Psalm 71 David writes,
“Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.” (vs 3)
Have you ever noticed how Satan shows up, unannounced? He always has bad news. The Bible is Good News, but Satan won’t have any of that. He brings up your past, your past sins, your past lusts, your past lies, your past “you”. He waves them in your face like dirty laundry, making you crinkle your nose and leaving you to hope no one is watching.
But your past is just that…your past. It has passed, it is over. If you have accepted God’s forgiveness over your life, all Satan can wave is an empty envelope. There is nothing he can hold against you if you’ve been forgiven and your slate is wiped clean.
So what about your present sins? Your present struggles and hidden secrets? Snatch that envelope Satan is waving in your face and give it to God. Let Him read the contents. Confess the lies and idolatry and let Him restore your heart again.
Satan comes to beat you up. God comes to make you whole. Don’t confuse the two.
Run to God in times in trouble—don’t run away from Him.
“Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like You? Though You have made me see troubles, many and bitter, You will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth You will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once again.”
– Psalm 71:19-21
